A Blue Utah in November?

Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:34:22 AM PDT

I know this is way, way early, and will more likely then not change, but a recent local poll, since Romney dropped out, seems to put Utah up for the general.

Long story short, according to a story in the Deseret News mentions the following information:

With "favorite son" Mitt Romney no longer an option, who will Utahns vote for in November?
Only 30 percent of Utahns polled in a new Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV survey Thursday said they'd vote for the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

And nearly as many, 25 percent, said they would cast their ballot for a Democrat, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Eleven percent said their choice was another Democrat, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The other Republicans still in the race, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, had only minimal support — 3 percent for Paul, a onetime Libertarian candidate for president, and just 2 percent for Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister.

What this means, I am unsure, but looking at the numbers, that's 36% Democrat, 35% Republican, and 29% undecided.

Bear in mind that Utah hasn't voted for a Democratic Presidential candidate since LBJ in 1964.  With Mitt out, does this put Utah into play come November?  Assuming McCain fails to solidify his base, then I would say yes.  Also, given the cracks we are seeing in the once solid GOP stronghold in the Intermountain region, it does put a smile on my face.
